Typing in your own language

Your website should be in the language you actually speak to your customers in. Here is the easiest way to type it — and for most people, that turns out to be not typing at all.

🎤 The easiest way is to speak. Every Android phone already has a microphone button on its keyboard, one tap from any box you type into. It understands Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. Nobody ever tells people it is there.

And it gives a better result. When you describe your business out loud you use your own words, the way you would say them to a customer standing in front of you. Hunting for a translation gives you something stiff that sounds like a form.

On an Android phone

Speaking is easiest

  1. Tap the box where you want to type.
  2. On the keyboard, tap the microphone (top right).
  3. Say it in Tamil. It writes what you say.
  4. Tap the mic again to stop.

If it types in English instead, hold the mic for a second — it will ask which language.

If you’d rather type

  1. Keyboard → tap the gear or the globe
  2. Languages → Add keyboard → choose Tamil
  3. Pick தமிழ் for a Tamil keyboard, or Tamil (transliteration) if you’d rather type vanakkam and let it turn into வணக்கம்
  4. Now the globe key switches between English and Tamil

Transliteration is the one most people find easiest — you type the sounds in English letters and it writes proper Tamil.

On an iPhone

Speaking: tap the box, tap the microphone on the keyboard, speak. If it comes out in English, add the Tamil keyboard first (below) and switch to it before you tap the mic.

Typing: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Tamil. Then tap the 🌐 globe key to switch.

On a computer

Easiest is to type it on your phone and send it to yourself on WhatsApp, then copy and paste.

Or open Google Translate, set the left box to Tamil, and type in English letters — vanakkam becomes வணக்கம் as you type. Copy what appears and paste it in.

A word about translation apps

You can use one to get started, but read it out loud before you keep it. If it sounds odd when you say it, it will read odd to your customer.

Your own words, spoken into the microphone, are almost always better than a translation.
